You only have to take a look around to see that athleisure is having a serious moment – the word itself has made its way into the dictionary (seriously, it’s official). As more and more of us strive to lead a balanced lifestyle, this oh-so convenient trend is every active, career and family gal’s dream. Best pulled off at a happy medium, here are five ways to stay ahead of the game (and keep it classy).

1. Know when to get changed

Smashed out a killer F45 class, now off to brunch? Great. We’re all about fusing fashion and function, but there’s nothing cool about hanging out in your sweaty threads post-workout. At the very least, throwing a fresh muscle tank or tee over your crop is a super easy way to transition into off-duty mode – complete the look by simply tying a sweater around your waist. Also try and opt for tops made from breathable fabrics (such as mesh) to minimise the sweat factor.

Socially acceptable or fashion faux pas? When it comes to yoga pants without a side of downward dog, there is a very fine line. Make use of layers to ensure tights are all day appropriate. Think; long tanks, oversized sweaters or anoraks.

2. Invest in neutrals

We’re talking black, white, grey, repeat. Doubling as everyday staples, the cost per wear for basic pieces such as plain tanks and tights are enough to make you want to stock up! Ideal for pre, during and post workout, neutrals also make it easier to go from gym to street effortlessly. Again, as much as tie-dye leggings look great in the yoga studio, they may have you turning heads for all the wrong reasons at your local café. A white muscle tank on the other hand works well with a pair of denim cut-offs on your next rest day. Case in point: Aim for versatility and high rotation.

3. Embrace a subtle pop of print

The beauty of athleisure? The ability to mix and match unexpected pieces. If you’re not really one for bold colour, start off slow. Opt for tights with subtle colour block finishes or side panel detailing – this introduces contrast into your wardrobe without too much fuss. We also can’t go past a super cute crop or branded tee as a statement piece. Layer your crop under a muscle tank with low-dropped armholes for a cheeky hint of detail.

4. Accessorise

Take cues from athleisure pros Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid and pull your look together with a killer pair of sunnies and a chic handbag for instant street cred. The stylish duo are also regularly snapped rocking a tee / bomber combo teamed with high-waisted leggings and trainers. A staple denim or leather jacket will never go astray either (wear over your shoulders for a slightly dressier look).

5. Kicks with everything (within reason)

You you can never have too many! White trainers in particular will immediately add a touch of laidback luxe to any outfit and can be worn all day, every day. For both style and comfort, team with anything from shorts and skirts to dresses and jeans. Effortless, yes – but an overly scuffed pair will do no favours for your overall polish, so try and keep them crisp and clean and replace when they’re past their due date.
