We worked out with Ellie Goulding
What do you do when you’re jet-lagged, due to perform an arena show in less than 24 hours and on the final leg of your world tour? If you’re Ellie Goulding, pop queen/mega babe/T-Swift squad member and epic fitness fiend, you work out. Duh.
While in town for her Sydney concert, Ellie, along with Nike Trainer Steph Buckner, led a bunch of lucky guests (including yours truly) through a killer Nike+ Training Club workout at the Nike Pitt Street store. Yep, that’s me in the orange top squatting behind Ellie. I was hurting big time.
There were reverse burpees (yeah, they’re a thing, and they hurt), glute-busting squats, ab moves for days and triceps push-ups (performed on a freaking medicine ball, you guys), and Ellie smashed through them all like the total #boss she is. Actually, after the workout, she told WF the 30-minute sesh could have been an hour longer. How’s that for endurance?
“If I didn’t keep my fitness up, I’d be a mess on the floor of the stage,” she said on the night. Considering she’s got six half-marathons under her belt and her own HIIT workout, ‘Tighten and Tone’, on the NTC app, we’d say she’s pretty fit – which is something she thanks her varied training schedule for.
“I do everything. I love trying out new things. I’ve just started a TRX class and my plan when I get back [to the UK] is to do this thing called Barre Core, which is for lengthening. I do everything from the NTC app, Insanity and the Skinny Bitch Collective to Barry’s Bootcamp and boxing. I think it’s really important to keep shocking your body. It’s good to keep it guessing.”
As much as she loves pushing her limits, recovery is also something Ellie puts high on her to-do list, which is why she created the ‘Run Ready Yoga’ workout for the NTC app. “I think people underestimate your body telling you things. Your body is very clever and smart, so if it’s telling you to have a rest, have a rest. I do love a really good stretch out. I love a bit of yoga and I try to listen to a couple of Spotify playlists for relaxation and meditation.”
Want to get as fit as Ellie? Add these total-body moves from the NTC app to your next sweat sesh and you’ve got yourself a deal:
1 Medicine ball slam Grab a medicine ball, place your feet hip-width apart, lift the ball over your head and throw it towards the floor as hard as you can.
2 Single-arm plank row Hold yourself in a push-up position (you can use dumbbells to make it harder), then draw one arm up, hugging your elbow towards your torso. Lower your arm back to the ground, then repeat on the opposite side.
3 Burpee Start with feet shoulder-width apart, lower into a squat, jump your feet back into a plank, complete a push-up, propel your feet forwards into a frog squat and then jump up into the air. Ouch.
