9 ways to maximise your day
Squeeze the most out of your 24/7 with these no-fuss tips on how to maximise your day
1. Make a to-do list
Want to make your minutes work for you? Write a to-do list. It’s simple, but ridiculously effective. “Most people are more efficient when they know what they’re doing, what’s expected and what the deadline is,” says life coach Louise Presley-Turner.
2. Write down your goals
Nope, this isn’t a repeat of your to-do list. Writing down an intention for your day or week will ensure you get all the small stuff done and out of the way.
“Don’t underestimate the power of a good goal. Without one, you’re more likely to waste your day,” says Presley-Turner. “Set a goal for the week and break your actions down into a daily list.”
3. Shop online
The internet can either be the biggest waster of time, or the biggest gainer of time. Do your food shopping online, and you’re guaranteed to save yourself a few minutes and a few dollars. Better yet, sign up to a meal-delivery service like Marley Spoon and have professionals shop and cook for you.
4. Work out before actual work
Squeezing in a workout before you hit the office leaves evenings and lunchtimes free. Plus, getting your sweat on first thing will help wake you up and focus your mind.
5. Meal prep your way to spare time
Got a slow Sunday? Make a big batch of your fave healthy dishes so you can freeze a few portions to eat during the week. You’ll save time when you get home from work, not to mention nix your last excuse to order take-away.
6. Wake up earlier
Set your alarm clock half an hour earlier. A study from the University of Northern Texas found that uni students who identify as being a ‘morning person’ get better grades. On top of that, people who get up early tend to get more done, according to Harvard biologist Christoph Randler.
7. Minimise distractions
This one might seem like a no-brainer, but ditching distractions can help you get a helluva lot more done. Turn that two-hour task into a 10-minute one by banning yourself from social media while you work. “I think we’d be very surprised by the amount of hours we squander on social media each day,” says Presley-Turner. “Set a timer for 15 minutes and when it pings, get back to your own life.”
8. Share the load
Don’t be afraid to ask for help – or whip your lazy roommate into line. If you’re doing your share of the housework, childcare or admin at work, negotiate a fairer split. “Any successful person will tell you that they delegate tasks they don’t enjoy and immerse themselves in doing what they’re good at,” adds Presley-Turner. So, less washing dirty dishes and more Insta stalking Chris Hemsworth?
9. Multi-task at lunch
The best way to do your chores? With a side of food, obvs! If you’ve got a meeting you can’t reschedule, do it over lunch. Need to buy your bestie a birthday present? Grab a smoothie-to-go and hit the shops.
