We’ve all been there – we’re sitting at home, flicking through Insta and admiring the many brightly coloured bowls of goodness, tanned women with abs you could bounce a 10 cent piece off and chicks in luxe workout-wear squatting, lunging and jumping. We’re inspired. We double tap. We love the way it looks. But we aren’t quite motivated enough to get up off the couch. The blanket we’re under is just so warm…

According to new research by Medibank, 1 in 5 of us get a daily hit of inspiration from social media, but three quarters of us aren’t exercising enough to regularly break a sweat.

Queens of Instagram fitspo, Base Body Babes (aka Felicia Oreb and Diana Johnson), know how to turn #couchspiration into real results. Here, they share their top tips to get moving, stay motivated and kick butt. 

Start small

“Consider going to a gym that’s close to work during your lunch break or packing all your healthy ingredients to prepare breakfast at work if you run out of time at home. It’s all about taking small steps that fit into your existing schedule. No matter how you feel, if you’re low on energy or having a bad day, just turn up. You’ll feel so much better once you’ve a completed a great workout.”

Change it up

“There’s nothing like a new training program to get you motivated to reach your goals. We recommend a weights-based workout for best results and to truly shape your body. Try to change your program every four weeks to prevent your body from adapting and plateauing. This is essential for optimal results and it helps keep you motivated because you set goals, reach them and then change your program. Your body needs to be continuously challenged in order for it to change and develop. If you keep doing things that your body can already do, it doesn’t need to change.”

Focus on you

“Don’t compare yourself to other people on Instagram. Rather, use those pics to inspire and motivate you to take action. If you’re not comfortable hitting the gym, try working out at home instead – before you know it, you’ll be feeling happier, healthier, fitter, stronger and more confident.” 

Balancing act

“Make sure you’re spending time relaxing with friends and family, doing things that make you feel happy on the inside as well as getting your sweat on regularly. If you find exercise taxing, make sure you reward yourself with downtime.”

“We love training with a gym buddy! Having someone to support you and have fun with while you train always helps to keep you motivated.”
